Chase or Attract. Which is it?

By the BeAwakeAwareAlive.com team

We’ve all been there. Staring at a phone, willing it to light up. Crafting the perfect message, analyzing the timing, and replaying a conversation in our heads for clues. We’ve felt the frantic energy of pursuit - the thrill of the chase, the anxiety of the unknown, the desperate hope that if we just try a little harder, we can make someone or something happen.

It’s the same in our careers. We chase the promotion, the client, the recognition. We hustle, we grind, we send endless cold emails, and we push our way into rooms we feel we don’t belong in. This is the "Chase" paradigm. It’s active, it’s exhausting, and it’s often fueled by a deep-seated fear of lack.

On the other side of the coin is the "Attract" paradigm. It’s the philosophy espoused by spiritual gurus and modern life coaches: "Become a magnet, not a hammer." "Focus on yourself, and the right things will come." "Let go and let flow." This approach feels serene, powerful, and holistic. It’s about inner work, vibration, and trusting the universe.

So, which is it? Do we chase our desires with relentless determination, or do we cultivate an inner state so magnetic that they are drawn to us effortlessly?

The answer, as with most profound truths, is not a simple either/or. It’s a delicate, dynamic, and powerful both/and. The art of a well-lived life isn’t in choosing one philosophy over the other; it’s in mastering the dance between them.

The Problem with the Perpetual Chase

The chase is not inherently bad. It’s the engine of ambition. It’s what drove our ancestors to hunt, explorers to set sail, and entrepreneurs to build empires. The energy of pursuit is vital. But when it becomes our only mode of operation, it becomes a trap.

The core problem with chasing is that it almost always comes from a place of scarcity. "I must chase because there isn't enough." "I must pursue this person because I might not find another like them." "I must push for this job because opportunities are rare."

When you operate from this mindset, you leak desperation. And desperation is not an attractive quality. It repels the very things you seek. Think about it: have you ever been drawn to someone who was trying too hard to impress you? Or felt confident in a salesperson who was overly pushy? The energy of neediness creates resistance.

Furthermore, the chase is fundamentally about control. We believe that through sheer force of will and effort, we can make the universe conform to our desires. This is an exhausting illusion. It leads to burnout, anxiety, and a feeling of being on a hamster wheel - running furiously but going nowhere. You might catch what you’re chasing, but it often feels hollow because you had to strong-arm it into existence.

The Promise and Peril of Pure Attraction

The "attract" model offers a powerful antidote. Its core principle is that your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. Instead of focusing on what you want to get, you focus on who you need to become.

This is a revolutionary shift. It’s about building a life so fulfilling, a self so confident, and a vibration so high that you naturally draw in opportunities and relationships that match that energy. It’s the "Field of Dreams" philosophy: "If you build it, they will come."

The work here is internal. It involves:

  • Self-Awareness: Understanding your beliefs, values, and limiting patterns.

  • Self-Development: Cultivating skills, knowledge, and emotional intelligence.

  • Alignment: Taking actions that feel good and authentic, not just strategic.

  • Surrender: Releasing the need to control the "how" and "when" and trusting the process.

The peril of this model is passive inaction. It’s easy to use "attracting" as a spiritual excuse for not doing the work. You can meditate on your ideal career all you want, but if you never leave your house, you won't "attract" a job offer. You can visualize the perfect partner, but if you never engage with the world, you're simply daydreaming. Attraction without action is just wishful thinking.

The Magnetic Chase: The Art of Aligned Action

So, where do these two paths meet? The sweet spot is what we might call the "Magnetic Chase," or "Aligned Action." This is the synthesis where you become both the creator and the magnet.

Here’s how it works: You do the inner work to become the person who attracts what you want, and then you take inspired, aligned action from that place of wholeness.

It’s a two-step dance.

Step 1: Cultivate the Attractor.

This is the foundation. Before you make a single move, you get your internal house in order. This is the "attract" part. You work on your confidence, your skills, your physical and mental health. You cultivate a life that is joyful and meaningful on its own, not contingent on obtaining a specific person or thing. You fill your own cup. You become the person you're looking for, whether it's a partner, a business, or a community. Your energy shifts from needy to self-sufficient. You are no longer a half looking for its other half; you are a whole, radiating completeness.

Step 2: Engage in the Aligned Action.

Now, from this place of fullness, you act. This is the "chase" part, but it's a different kind of chase.

Instead of chasing a specific person, you date. You put yourself out there, you are open, you start conversations. It's an act of engagement, not desperation.

Instead of chasing a single promotion, you do your job excellently. You take on projects that excite you, you develop your skills, you network authentically. You are making yourself visible, not begging for a title.

Instead of chasing a client, you share your work. You create content, you talk about what you do with passion, you build a reputation for quality. You are an invitation, not a demand.

The key difference is detachment from the outcome. When you take aligned action, you are not attached to a specific result. You're doing it because it feels good and true to who you are. You send the email, and you let go of the need for a reply. You go on the date, and you let go of the need for it to lead to a relationship. You are in the game, but you're not controlling the scoreboard.

This is the most powerful state you can be in. You’re taking action, which is necessary for anything to happen. But because you’re not chasing from a place of lack, you’re not pushing things away. You are a moving, dynamic, attractive force. You are a person with agency and ambition, but also with peace and trust.

So, Which Is It?

It’s both. The secret isn't to choose between chasing and attracting. The secret is to attract at the level of your being and chase at the level of your doing.

Become the person who deserves what you want. Cultivate the inner confidence, peace, and value that makes you a magnet. Then, from that powerful place, take bold, consistent, and joyful action in the world. Go to the party, but don't go hunting for a partner. Go to the interview, but don't go begging for a job. Present your proposal, but don't cling to the outcome.

Stop chasing what you want. Start attracting who you need to become. Then, when you're that person, the "chase" is no longer a desperate scramble - it’s a confident, joyful engagement with the world. And the world, in turn, responds not to your need, but to your worth.
