The Book of Enoch and Why It's Missing from Western Bibles

If you have spent time reading about old religious books, you may have heard of the Book of Enoch. It is an ancient text. It is in the Bible used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It is not in most Western Bibles. That means it is not in the Bibles used by most Catholic and Protestant churches.

So why is it missing? The answer is not simple. It is not just about whether the book was true or false. It is about history, power, church councils, and which books people decided to accept.

Who Was Enoch?

Enoch appears in the book of Genesis. Genesis 5:24 says, “Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him.” That is all. The Bible does not explain what happened. It does not say where God took him. It does not say why.

That short verse made people curious. Over time, Jewish writers wrote more stories about Enoch. They believed he saw heaven. They believed he learned secrets. They believed he spoke for God. These stories became the Book of Enoch.

What Is the Book of Enoch?

The Book of Enoch is not one book. It is a collection of five smaller books. Different writers wrote them. They were written between about 300 and 100 years before Jesus. The writers used Enoch’s name, but Enoch did not write them. This was a common way to write in that time. It gave the book authority.

The most famous part is the Book of the Watchers. It tells about 200 angels. These angels came down to Mount Hermon. They saw human women and wanted them. They married them and had children. Their children were giants called the Nephilim. The angels also taught humans bad things. They taught how to make weapons, how to use magic, how to read stars, and how to use makeup. The earth became full of evil. God decided to judge the world.

Enoch is taken on a journey through heaven. He sees angels, stars, and hidden places. He learns about judgment. He sees a figure called the Son of Man. Many Christians later read this as a hint about Jesus.

Why Was It Not in the Jewish Bible?

The Book of Enoch was popular. Copies were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. So some Jewish groups read it. But it was never accepted into the Hebrew Bible. That is the Jewish Bible.

Why not? One reason is time. Jewish tradition said prophecy stopped with the prophet Malachi. That was around 450 years before Jesus. The Book of Enoch was written later. So many Jewish leaders did not accept it as new Scripture.

Another reason is its teaching. The idea that angels came down and had sex with women seemed wrong to many rabbis. It made angels look sinful. That did not fit their beliefs. So the book was left out.

Early Christians Liked It

Early Christians were more open to the Book of Enoch. Many church leaders quoted it. The Epistle of Barnabas treated it like Scripture. Justin Martyr and Athenagoras used it. Tertullian even defended it. He said the Jews rejected it because it predicted Christ.

So the Book of Enoch was not always a strange, forgotten book. For a time, many Christians believed it was important.

The Problem with Jude

One big problem came from the book of Jude in the New Testament. Jude 14–15 says, “Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: ‘Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones to execute judgment on everyone…’”

That quote is almost the same as 1 Enoch 1:9. This caused trouble. If Jude is in the Bible, and Jude quotes the Book of Enoch as prophecy, does that mean the Book of Enoch is also Scripture?

Some people rejected Jude because of this. Jerome, an early church leader, said many people rejected Jude because it quoted from the apocryphal book of Enoch. But Jude stayed in the Bible. Church leaders found ways to explain it. Some said Jude quoted a true prophecy from Enoch, not the book. Others said the Book of Enoch had been partly changed or corrupted. So they kept Jude but left out Enoch.

The Church Councils Closed the Door

In the fourth century, church leaders began making official lists of Bible books. These lists are called canons. A canon is the official list of accepted books.

Around A.D. 364, a church meeting at Laodicea put out a list. It did not include the Book of Enoch. Then in A.D. 367, Athanasius of Alexandria wrote a famous letter. He listed the books that should be read in churches. He said books like Enoch were not real Scripture. He even called them heretical. He argued that no Scripture existed before Moses. So Enoch could not have written one.

Church leaders used three main tests. First, a book had to come from an apostle or be approved by apostles. Second, it had to be used widely in churches. Third, it had to teach the right beliefs. The Book of Enoch failed all three. It claimed Enoch wrote it, but it was written much later. It was not used widely in the West. Its angel stories seemed strange. So it was left out.

The Ethiopian Church Kept It

Not every church left it out. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church kept the Book of Enoch. Their Bible has 81 books. It includes Enoch and another book called Jubilees. This makes the Ethiopian church special. It is the only modern church that treats these books as Scripture.

In Ethiopia, the Book of Enoch was read as pointing to Jesus. It was not forgotten. It was copied and protected for centuries.

How the West Rediscovered It

The West lost the Book of Enoch for a long time. Then in 1773, a Scottish explorer named James Bruce went to Ethiopia. He was looking for the source of the Nile River. While there, he got three copies of the Ethiopic text. In 1821, Richard Laurence published the first English translation. Suddenly, scholars in Europe and America could read it. They were amazed. They saw how much it had shaped early Christian thought.

Why It Still Matters

The Book of Enoch was not left out because someone proved it was false. It was left out because of history. It was left out because of geography. It was left out because of church politics and practical choices. Fourth-century leaders drew a line. That line still affects what most Christians read today.

The Book of Enoch still matters because it helps us understand the world of the New Testament. Its images of fallen angels, judgment, and the Son of Man appear in the Gospels and Revelation. Its quote in Jude reminds us that the line between Scripture and non-Scripture is not always clear.

So why is it missing from Western Bibles? Not because it was proven wrong. It is missing because people with power decided it did not fit. And that decision, made long ago, still shapes the Bibles most of us read today.
